Wegovy injections are a prescription medication to help patients with excess weight or obesity to achieve sustainable weight loss, as well as regulate their blood sugar levels. 

Wegovy, or semaglutide, mimics the action of incretin, which is a hormone released in the gut following food intake.

Wegovy helps to regulate your appetite. It increases feelings of fullness, reduces hunger and the preference for high-fat foods.

It also reduces blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin when blood sugar levels are high.

The science behind Wegovy weight management injections

Wegovy is a prescription weight loss medication suitable for adult patients who are overweight or obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It is also available to adult with a weight-related health condition who have a BMI of 27 or higher. 

Wegovy, or semaglutide, is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means that it mimics the function of the naturally occurring hormone, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This incretin is released by the intestines in response to food intake. 

Through mimicking this hormone, Wegovy helps patients feel full sooner after eating, and suppresses food cravings. It also regulates blood sugar by the release of when blood sugar levels are high. 

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Wegovy as a treatment for reducing the risk of overweight and obese adults suffering serious heart problems or strokes.

Mounjaro or Wegovy 

Both and Wegovy are GLP-1 receptor agonist weight loss medications. Both mimic the action of the GLP-1 hormone to regulate appetite and increase feelings of fullness. 

Mounjaro is a dual-action medicine; it also the GIP receptor, which increases insulin sensitivity.  

Wegovy or Ozempic

Like Wegovy, Ozempic is also a brand name for semaglutide, and is administered by the patient once weekly.  

Both Wegovy and Ozempic regulate the appetite and increase feelings of fullness, to help reduce food intake and achieve sustainable weight loss.

Ozempic is indicated as a treatment for type-2 diabetes, obesity and associated medical conditions.

Wegovy is a weight loss medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It is prescribed to manage excess weight and obesity, and to regulate blood sugar.

Wegovy was also approved to help lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people diagnosed with heart and circulatory diseases.

Wegovy is prescribed for adult patients who are overweight or obese with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher.

It is also available to adult patients with a weight-related health condition who have a BMI of 27 or higher.

Wegovy mimics the hormone, GLP-1, which regulates appetite and blood sugar levels.
It helps patients to feel full sooner after eating, and suppresses appetite.

Wegovy treatment is administered via a pre-filled injector pen. It is self-administered weekly, under the skin in the upper arms, stomach, thighs or buttocks.

The starting dose of Wegovy is 0.25mg once a week, this will be gradually increased every four weeks.

Your practitioner will select either 1.7mg or 2.4mg for your dose, depending on your requirements.

Wegovy is designed to be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise. This will ensure your weight loss is both and long lasting.

Wegovy can cause side-effects in some patients, but not all.

Mild side-effects can include:

- Abdominal pain

- Constipation or diarrhoea

- Nausea or vomiting

- Dizziness

- Headache

- Fatigue

- Flatulence

- Soreness at injection site

Any side-effects are temporary and can be easily managed. Your practitioner will give you guidance on how to manage them. Should your side-effects continue, please speak to your practitioner.

In rare cases, Wegovy can have more severe side-effects such as:

- Pancreatitis

- Hypoglycemia

- Kidney
- Allergic reaction

- Gallbladder disease, gallstone or cholecystitis

Wegovy can also cause changes in your facial appearance, because of the rapid weight loss it can stimulate. Your face may become thinner and seem hollower.

While there is no specific known risk in combining Wegovy and alcohol, it is recommended to limit or avoid alcohol consumption while taking Wegovy injections. 

Alcohol can affect blood sugar levels, potentially making Wegovy less effective. 

Wegovy has been approved for use in the UK by the Medicines and Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA). This means that Wegovy is considered safe for use in eligible patients when it is prescribed by a registered health practitioner.

Wegovy starts to influence your appetite within a few days. Many patients experience initial weight loss in the first few weeks of treatment. 

You will see more significant weight change as the dose of Wegovy increases, and with lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and a healthy diet. 

Clinical trials have shown that taking between 1.7mg and 2.4mg of Wegovy can lose 5 to 15% of their body weight after 68 weeks of treatment*.
